Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a relatively common condition that causes a tingling sensation, numbness and sometimes pain, in the hand and fingers, (most commonly, the thumb, index and middle fingers). Other symptoms include pins and needles, thumb weakness and dull aching in the hand or arm.

Although it is not known exactly what causes the inflammation and eventual compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel, it is the compression of this nerve that affects sensations travelling to the hand, creating discomfort that can, over time, cause decreased strength and movement.
